Most people already know they should leave space in a trip.
They just don’t do it.
I didn’t either.
I’ve told you about Day Five. The pajamas. The panic attack. The kids who already knew what I needed a meltdown to learn.
I thought I understood it after that. Schedule the down days. Leave room for nothing. I’d lived it. I’d written it. I believed it.
And then I read something that stopped me.
Travel psychologists spent eight years tracking why some people come home from trips fundamentally changed while others return exactly as they left. Same destinations. Same budgets. Same length of time. One variable predicted everything. It had nothing to do with where they went.
It was unplanned time.
Which made me ask the question I should have asked a long time ago. Not what should we do differently. But why can’t we, even when we know better. Because that’s the thing that actually needs answering. Behaviour doesn’t change because we understand it intellectually. It changes when we understand what’s driving it.
So. Why do we fill every day.
The investment.
We saved for this. Not just the money — the time, the negotiation, the mental load of getting out the door. The months of planning, the arrangements made, the version of this trip that lived in your head long before you got on the plane. By the time you arrive you have spent so much of yourself getting there that an empty day feels like a betrayal of all of it. Like you owe the trip something. Like the only way to honour the effort is to extract maximum return from every hour.
So you fill it. You fill it until the Louvre weighs the same as the market weighs the same as the vineyard and you come home having seen everything and absorbed nothing. The investment didn’t get protected. It got buried.
The worthiness.
This one is quieter and harder to admit. It’s not really about the money. It’s about who you are when you’re not being productive.
Most of us have spent years building an identity around output. Around earning our place. Around being the person who makes the most of things. A slow day at home feels lazy. A slow day abroad — when you’re supposed to be making the most of it — feels like a character flaw. So you book the tour. You make the reservation. You come home and when someone asks how it was you have a full answer ready because the alternative — I sat in a square for three hours and didn’t do much — feels like something you’d have to defend.
The itinerary isn’t just filling time. It’s evidence. Proof that you were there, that you did it right, that you deserve to have gone.
The quiet.
This is the one nobody wants to talk about.
An empty day sounds like rest until you’re actually in one. And then it’s just you — in a foreign city, no agenda, no next thing — with your own thoughts and nowhere to put them. And some of us, a lot of us, haven’t been alone with our thoughts in a very long time. Not really. There’s always a phone, a plan, a reason to be somewhere else mentally. The busyness isn’t accidental. It’s a system. And travel, for all its promise of escape, can become just another version of it — a new set of inputs to hide inside.
The empty day doesn’t just ask you to slow down. It asks you to find out what’s there when you do. And that is genuinely frightening if you’re not sure what the answer is.
Here’s the thing about all of that. Every single one of those reasons is understandable. Rational, even.
None of them are serving you.
Because the research finding isn’t that unplanned time is nice to have. It’s that without it, the trip doesn’t fully happen. The experiences don’t consolidate. The version of you that was supposed to come home different — rearranged by something unexpected — never got the space to emerge. You were too busy filling the days to let anything actually land.
The empty day is not the reward you get after you’ve done enough. It is the mechanism. It is how any of it means anything.
You don’t have to earn the slow day. You don’t have to justify the square, the long lunch, the afternoon with no photographs. You’re allowed to let the trip find you instead of the other way around.
Stop protecting the itinerary.
